What is Shiatsu?
Shiatsu is a Japanese healing therapy and translates as "finger pressure". It originates from oriental massage and uses the same theory, points and meridians as Acupuncture in order to improve health and well-being. Shiatsu is a relaxing treatment and beneficial for a range of emotional and physical ailments. It has been likened to Oriental Physiotherapy or Acupuncture without needles, but I don't think either descripttion quite captures the spirit of Shiatsu.
Shiatsu practice shares features with European-style massage and other forms of bodywork and uses physical pressure and stretches to reduce muscular tension and loosen stiff joints. However, unlike massage, the receiver remains clothed during the treatment and the principal aim of Shiatsu is not to work just on muscles and joints, but on the overall energy system of the client.
Shiatsu can and frequently does touch a person on both physical and emotional levels. It offers time and space to relax and recharge and it can support positive changes in your life. Shiatsu may be given with the receiver lying on a futon, or on a massage table, or seated according to preference and practicality.
Shiatsu is complementary to mainstream Western medicine, not an alternative to it.
